Paul Warne handed boost as 'fantastic' member of Derby County's promotion-winning side signs new contract

Derby County have confirmed a new deal for one of their stars that helped lead a push towards League One promotion last season.

After securing promotion to the Championship, Derby County have wasted no time in strengthening their squad for the forthcoming campaign.

The Rams’ first summer addition saw them snap up Ben Osborn on a free transfer from Sheffield United in a bid to bolster their midfield.

Another free agent arrived through the door shortly after, with Kayden Jackson joining the club from now Premier League outfit, Ipswich Town.

Derby then turned to the loan market for their latest signing, bringing Jerry Yates in on loan from Swansea City after he scored eight goals in the Championship last term.

As well as adding to their squad, Paul Warne has been looking to tie down some key members of his promotion-winning side.

Earlier this week it was confirmed that 19-goal striker James Collins had penned a one-year extension, keeping him at Pride Park until 2025.

Now, another key figure from Derby’s successful 2023/24 season has committed his future to the club.

Ryan Nyambe signs new Derby County contract

With his deal having just 12 months left to run, Derby have moved to tie Ryan Nyambe down to a fresh contract to ensure they do not lose him for free next year.

The 26-year-old, who joined the Rams as a free agent last year, has committed his future to the club until 2027.

Nyambe was a key figure for Derby as they secured promotion from League One, making 21 appearances in all competitions and filling in at centre-back on a few occasions.

Derby conceded just 37 goals in the 2023/24 League One campaign – the lowest in the division – and Nyambe played a key part in that outstanding record.

Derby yet to see best of Ryan Nyambe

While the right-back did play an important role for Derby last season, the Derbyshire outfit are yet to see the best of Nyambe.

The Namibia international has previously played 185 games in the Championship, the majority of which came with Blackburn Rovers.

During his stint with Blackburn, Nyambe earned high praise from then-manager Tony Mowbray, who dubbed him ‘fantastic’, as per the Lancashire Telegraph.

He said: “He’s got fantastic body strength, great acceleration, we know his growth areas. He got in behind late on and overhit his cross again. That’s alright, he’ll keep working at that and get better.”

However, Nyambe is perhaps yet to reach his full potential with his current club due to injury issues.

The defender missed the final 11 games of the previous campaign with a torn thigh muscle.

But with Nyambe now having a full pre-season to recover, the 26-year-old’s experience should prove crucial in Derby’s fight to stay up next term.
