Courteney Cox has opened up about her dear friend and co-star Matthew Perry following his death, but there’s a tiny detail worth highlighting.

Rewatching a comfort TV show is the self-care most of us crave when we’re feeling down, and there’s one perfect show always there for you when the rain starts to pour. Friends ran for 10 seasons between 1994 and 2004, sculpting a legacy as the most beloved sitcom ever made. Its central stars played friends, and behind the scenes, they were friends. Their chemistry was unmatched, but the tight-knit group of six lost the indescribably talented Matthew Perry in October 2023. Since the Chandler actor’s passing at 54, his Friends co-star Courteney Cox has explained he’s still with her…

Courteney Cox’s words on Matthew Perry help keep him here with us

CBS Sunday Morning recently unveiled an extended interview with Monica actress Courteney Cox that took place earlier this year, in which she opened up about losing Matthew and the lasting effect he’s had on her life.

“What stands out most in your life? What kind of impact did he have?” the interviewer asked her.

“I think he’s probably one of the funniest human beings in the world,” she commended, straight off the bat. “He’s just so funny. He is genuinely a huge heart, obviously struggled. I’m so thankful I got to work so closely with him for so many years.”

Notice that she speaks about him in the present tense. It’s as though he never left, and in some ways, she believes he never did. “He visits me a lot,” she confessed. “If we believe in that.”

The interviewer, finding this poignant, raised that she still felt his presence and she agreed.

“Oh yeah,” she said, and he’s not the only one. “I talk to my mum, my dad, Matthew—I feel like there are a lotta people that are, I think, that guide us. I do sense, yeah, I sense Matthew’s around for sure.”

Fans are very moved after picking up how she refers to Matthew in the here and now. “I love how she doesn’t speak about Mathew Perry in the past tense,” one reacted. “I miss you too Chandler Bing and I say it every day too.”

Courteney Cox shared love for the entire Friends ‘family’

The 20th anniversary of the final episode rolled around this May, and Courteney hopped onto Instagram to express that she was “forever grateful” for it.

“I’m grateful I had the opportunity to work with such wonderful people and to live the life that
I have now,” she reflected speaking to CBS.

“That was my family,” she said of her five central co-stars; Matthew, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer. “We went through everything. Those 10 years were everything… they’re my family.”

Even without having starred in it, millions of audiences feel the same way. Friends just hits differently, always.
