Fabian Schar responds when asked if Eddie Howe could leave Newcastle for England

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has previously been touted as a future option for England.

Having rebuilt his reputation at Newcastle after relegation at Bournemouth, it’s certainly a link that makes sense.

Howe, after all, is one of the most high-profile English managers in the game.

While last season was difficult for a multitude of reasons, the 46-year-old is still the man who led the Toon to the Champions League and a Carabao Cup final during his first full campaign in charge.

To date, he has not expressed a desire to leave St James’ Park but the idea of replacing Gareth Southgate in the Three Lions dugout at some point is a logical move for him – whenever that may be.

The Football Association (FA) are understood to admire the former Bournemouth boss, although those behind the scenes on Tyneside are thought to believe they can keep him from out of their clutches, should they come calling.

Indeed, defender Fabian Schar – who will come up against England for Switzerland at Euro 2024 on Saturday – doesn’t want that to happen anytime soon.

Fabian Schar responds when asked if Eddie Howe can become England manager

Asked whether or not he believed Howe could move into international management, Schar said (via The Independent): “Well, actually I hope he will stay at Newcastle.

“Because if you see the work he’s done over last few years, I think you know he has a lot of quality and knows how to handle a big club and team.

“I mean, for myself as well, he did very well and I’m really happy to have him as a manager, so hopefully he stays at Newcastle. That’s the only thing I can think of.”

PIF still have big faith in Eddie Howe at Newcastle

Last season was certainly difficult but PIF still believe Newcastle are ahead of schedule.

The success of Howe’s first full year in charge was always going to be difficult to replicate, not least because of the raised levels in expectation.

However, decision-makers are still believed to view Howe as having credit in the bank and there is an acceptance that their project is still on the right track.

Quite whether or not that will change if Newcastle struggle again remains to be seen…
