Arsenal should consider move for boyhood fan Mikel Arteta praised; he's available on free transfer - opinion

Arsenal have been linked with a surprise move for Daniel Bentley as Mikel Arteta seemingly looks to bring in another goalkeeper this summer.

It would be no surprise to see Arsenal sign at least one goalkeeper this summer, amid doubts over the future of Aaron Ramsdale at the Emirates. Perhaps it would also make some sense to loan Karl Hein out after he signed a new contract.

And it was reported on Sunday that Arsenal are interested in Wolves goalkeeper Daniel Bentley, with the 30-year-old potentially willing to make the move, even if he ends up as third choice in North London.

Bentley is a solid pair of hands, but Wolves are probably going to want some sort of fee given that he has tended to be the man to come in for Jose Sa when required.

Boyhood Arsenal fan now available on free transfer

Interestingly, a player Mikel Arteta has previously signed is now a free agent, so perhaps he should be on Arsenal’s radar before they pursue a deal for Bentley.

Mathew Ryan made just three appearances during his time with Arsenal, arriving on loan during the 2021 January transfer window as cover for Bernd Leno. He was signed after it had become clear that Alex Runarsson was not ready to be the backup to the German.

Mathew Ryan impressed Mikel Arteta

Ryan is an Arsenal fan, while Arteta praised his ‘really good’ character during his time at the club. But he would not extend his stay and would sign for Real Sociedad that summer.

The 32-year-old is now available on a free transfer after also having spells in Denmark and Netherlands, so perhaps it would not be the worst move for Arsenal to look at bringing him back as cover for David Raya and maybe even Ramsdale.

Ryan may feel that he is still good enough to be a number one elsewhere, but the chance to return to Arsenal would surely be a tempting one, even if he is unlikely to see a lot of game-time.
