Arsenal are reportedly set to announce their first signing of the summer transfer window within the next 24 to 48 hours.

The north London side have sprung into life since the turn of the month in the market, with Arsenal finally expected to turn up the heat in the transfer window as Mikel Arteta looks to make a slew of new signings before the start of pre-season.

Arsenal to confirm Riccardo Calafiori arrival soon

According to Italian journalist Daniele Longo, Arsenal ‘expect’ to confirm the signing of Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori within the next 24 to 48 hours, with the Gunners agreeing personal terms with the 22-year-old.

Longo wrote: “Arsenal expect to close the Calafiori operation within 24/48 hours. €50m plus bonuses to Bologna (of which 40% to Basel). For Riccardo, contract until 2029 at €4m (bonuses included) per season.”

A breakout star at Euro 2024 with Italy, the arrival of Calafiori will signal the beginning of Arsenal’s summer spending, with the youngest expected to compete for the left-back position as well as provide cover for Gabriel Magalhaes.

With Jakub Kiwior reportedly set to leave Arsenal, as well, the signing of Calafiori could be the next evolution for the Gunners’ defence, who this summer will also welcome Jurrien Timber back into the squad after a year out through injury.

Calafiori opens a lot of tactical possibilities for the Gunners

Few Arsenal fans would have expected a defender to be Arteta’s first major signing of the summer transfer window, yet it’s clear that the former Manchester City coach has a plan in place with Calafiori.

The versatile defender was impressive at the Euros with Italy and played a huge role for Bologna in their incredible journey to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history.

And with Arsenal signing Calafiori, the 22-year-old defender could open up a lot of tactical ideas for the north London side, given just how versatile the youngster is and how detailed Arteta can be with his instructions.
