John Achterberg reacts after ‘incredible’ player confirms he’s leaving Liverpool

Liverpool certainly need to rebuild their squad this summer if Arne Slot wants to successfully compete on all fronts.

The Reds are now back in the Champions League, and need a big and talented group if they are to make a significant comeback in the competition.

At the same time, the new man in the Anfield dugout will need to perform well domestically, particularly in the Premier League.

New players should, therefore, be among his top priorities in the coming days and weeks, particularly given the exits that have taken place.

Liverpool lost long-serving duo Joel Matip and Thiago at the end of the season, with the pair leaving upon the expiry of their contracts.

John Achterberg reacts after Adrian confirms Liverpool exit

Goalkeeper Adrian’s deal also expired, with the ‘incredible’ player’s future uncertain upon Slot’s arrival, even with Adrian having expressed a desire to return to his native Spain.

The shot-stopper has, however, now confirmed his Liverpool exit on X, with former Reds goalkeeping coach John Achterberg reacting to the news.

Tagging Adrian on X, Achterberg wrote: ‘What a guy and job you did at Liverpool. You won the PL, Uefa Super Cup, Charity Shield, been a great human and colleague for all the keepers, doing a great job.

“You’re part of the LFC History and I wish you and your family all the best in the future amigo, YNWA.’

Liverpool fans will be grateful for Adrian’s services

Achterberg knows Adrian better than most, and will know he was a fantastic servant to Liverpool, with the Spaniard often stepping in when Alisson couldn’t play.

The 37-year-old made 26 appearances for the Merseyside club following his move from Premier League rivals West Ham.

The Spanish shot-stopper kept a total of seven clean sheets for the Anfield outfit, with 36 goals conceded.

Adrian didn’t get the send-off that the likes of Matip and Thiago did on the final day of the season, but fans will certainly be grateful for all he did at Liverpool.

A return to Spain is now likely on the cards for the veteran goalkeeper, who played for Real Betis before his time in England.
