Report: Enzo Maresca is expected to pick £25m Chelsea player in his XI to start next season

There’s an expectancy that Chelsea’s £25m player will get a chance in the starting line-up at the very start of the new season.

The Blues will go into the 2024/25 campaign with some uncertainty after yet another change in the manager’s dugout.

Enzo Maresca, who led Leicester City to Championship promotion last season, is the new Chelsea head coach.

A key position for any team is who wears the gloves in-between the sticks.

It’s been reported that Chelsea’s No 1 for the start of the next campaign has already been decided.

Robert Sanchez is expected to be in Chelsea’s XI

According to The Athletic, Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez is expected to begin the new season in the team.

It is explained that Blues coach Maresca stresses huge importance on his keepers playing out from the back and passing it short.

Sanchez, who cost Chelsea £25m (BBC) from Brighton last summer, is set to get a major lifeline.

The 26-year-old gloveman lost his starting position to teammate Djordje Petrovic during last season.

A change of management is set to work in Sanchez’s favour, though. In fairness, the Spaniard has the edge as a ball-playing keeper over Petrovic.

Is this a good move?

The Chelsea Chronicle has real doubts over whether Sanchez is the correct long-term option in goal for the Blues.

However, Maresca deserve the chance to look at the squad and make his own mind up.

Mads Hermansen, the Leicester goalkeeper, was absolutely integral to the way that the Foxes played last season. He’s the definition of a modern keeper that looks so comfortable with his passing.

If Sanchez isn’t up to scratch on the ball, he’ll be quickly found out.

Sanchez has played 21 games so far in Chelsea colours, keeping five clean sheets.

It’s going to be interesting to see if he can turn his Blues career around in the new season.
