Heather Dinich on Deion Sanders, Colorado being ‘judged on a different scale: ‘It’s Hollywood’

There is more scrutiny on the Colorado Buffaloes than the majority of programs. It’s something that head coach Deion Sanders has noticed, pointing out that he’s “judged on a different scale,” during Big 12 Media Days.

ESPN insider Heather Dinich went on Get Up. There, she shared her thoughts on Deion Sanders’ comments and why Colorado is being watched differently than other programs.

“Because the lens that we view that program through was created by Deion Sanders,” Heather Dinich said. “It’s Hollywood. There’s a reason he has five million followers on his Instagram account.”

“A lot of that is the success he’s had throughout his life, but everyone wants to know what’s he gonna say next? What’s he gonna do next? That’s why everybody’s paying attention to them.”

Part of what Sanders had argued about how he’s judged differently was on the basis that the majority of college coaches are critiqued solely for their wins. However, he believes that in his case he’s also judged on things like academics and how the team is constructed.

That’s something that Dinich didn’t agree with Sanders about. Instead, she argued that all schools, and not just Colorado, are judged on those things too.

“I would push back just a little bit on the different standards. Because I could tell you, there’s no greater pressure than at Texas, where I sat with Steve Sarkisian in his office and he told me as his team’s win total increased, so did his team’s GPA. So, every college coach in the country is facing a similar standard in that they need to win, they need to get to the College Football Playoff, and they do need to have those GPAs and all those intangibles,” Dinich said.

“But I do agree for all the reasons we just said that Colorado is viewed differently.”

Deion Sanders explains why wins do not dictate success for Colorado in 2024

Coming off a four-win season, there is an expectation that Colorado will take a step forward in terms of record in 2024. However, Deion Sanders says wins won’t dictate success for the team.

“Football-wise? No, no, because we’re always measured differently. We would never fulfill your thought process. Just say, for instance, we go to a bowl. ‘They should have won more games. They should have been in that bowl, but they gave away that lead.’ You know, it’s always going to be something. We know what success means to us. We’ll keep that in-house,” Sanders said.

“Who doesn’t plan on winning? Is there any coach that came here that doesn’t plan on winning? Like, you said it like it was a news flash, right? You’re darn right I plan on winning.”
