Shedeur Sanders claims Colorado is ‘everybody’s Super Bowl’

Shedeur Sanders made headlines at Big 12 Media Days when he claimed Colorado is “everybody’s Super Bowl.”

On the surface, it’s an intriguing statement from the Buffaloes’ quarterback. But when you peel back the layers, it’s a fascinating situation when teams play Colorado.

Colorado created buzz as soon as Sanders’ father Deion took over the program ahead of the 2023 season and despite a 4-8 season, the hype train hasn’t slowed down.

“(It’s) been that since day one,” Sanders said. “I remember(my) first media day when I was in HBCU, I said we won’t lose a game. I’m undefeated in the SWAC so I already know what the expectation comes with. I know we’re everybody’s Super Bowl so I really just stay level headed and grounded. I would never want to be that guy to look back and not (be) able to take advantage of the moment we have right now.”

You have to go back to when Shedeur Sanders and Colorado were 3-0 last year but were then blasted by Oregon 42-6. That’s when Dan Lanning said Colorado was “fighting for clicks and we’re fighting for wins.”

It was a clear indication that playing Colorado came with a lot of attention, deserved or not. Because of the attention Sanders and the program commanded, every single play can be critiqued.

And of course, if you start losing, it is much easier to point fingers and rip their process. Colorado turned over a lot of the roster again, including the entire offensive line, ahead of 2024.

On paper, it looks like a better Buffaloes team with Sanders under center again. As a Heisman candidate with teammate Travis Hunter, a two-way star, Colorado will command all of that attention again, especially early.

If the Buffaloes keep winning, the stakes will only increase against each opponent in the Big 12.

“This is a new team,” Sanders said. “Whatever happened last year doesn’t have anything to do with them. It’s new players, we’re better at every position, we’re better versions of ourselves. So you should not expect a lesser result in that.”

At Big 12 Media Days, Deion Sanders met with the ESPNU broadcast. There, he broke down and shared the ways that Shedeur has elevated his game this offseason.

“Work on some of the little, mechanical things,” Deion Sanders said. “He has a tremendous quarterback coach out of Houston. He does a wonderful job.”

“But he works on the little things and not just the mechanics of footwork and everything and ball placement and releases, but getting to know his players, his receivers, where they want the ball. You can see in seven-on-sevens, after practice, grabbing a guy, pulling them to the side, and he’s telling him what he saw.”
