During the Big 12 Football Media Days, Texas Tech head football coach Joey McGuire had the opportunity to share his thoughts on the incoming programs to the conference: Colorado, Utah, and the two Arizona schools, Arizona and Arizona State.
Arguably, the biggest name among the coaching ranks for the four incoming programs is Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders. During his media address, McGuire shared his thoughts on what the Buffaloes head coach can bring to the conference.
“I’m a Texan and grew up in the old Southwest Conference and the old Big 12, so it’s great to see Colorado back in the right conference… Man, I love Deion,” said McGuire. “I always tell everybody, I coached Bucky, his oldest son, in high school. He’s honestly the best dad of a player that I’ve ever had. He was absolutely incredible. But what he brings, he’s who he is. He doesn’t make any excuses, and he doesn’t take anything back. He’s going to say what he believes in and say what he thinks.”
McGuire, who was a high school head football coach in Texas, is familiar with not only Deion but also the rest of the Sanders family. That familiarity is what makes the Red Raiders head coach believe the Big 12 conference is getting a solid acquisition in bringing back one of its founding members in Colorado and its head coach.
As McGuire continued, he highlighted what he believes Sanders and the buffaloes will bring to the Big 12.
“He brings a lot of excitement, [and] I think Colorado is going to be really good,” McGuire said. “They’ve added a lot of talent, and they do have one of the best quarterbacks in the nation. Whenever you’ve got a quarterback like his son that can make plays with his arm and his feet, you’ve got a chance to win games.”
“I think it’s going to be a lot of fun. I am glad that he gets to come to Lubbock first before I have to go to Boulder. I think that’s going to be a big game late in the season, and I’m excited to see him.”
While McGuire and Sanders admire and respect each other, that will likely take a brief hiatus in early November when Colorado travels to Lubbock, TX, to take on Texas Tech. If McGuire is correct in his assessment, the Red Raiders faithful will be in for an exciting showdown on November 9th filled with offensive fireworks.
