Deion Sanders addresses Shedeur Sanders’, Travis Hunter’s chances for the Heisman Trophy

Colorado has two of the better players in all of college football on their roster in QB Shedeur Sanders and ATH Travis Hunter. That could, depending on how the season goes, mean the Buffaloes have two shots at winning The Heisman Trophy.

Deion Sanders addressed the odds that either player brings home the biggest award in the sport during his press conference at Big 12 Media Days. Simply put, his only interest in their possible candidacies would be the fact that it would mean they were winning enough games.

“I hope so because that means we’re winning,” Sanders said. “You don’t get the Heisman unless your team wins.”

Sanders, the Buffs’ QB1, is coming off his first season in Boulder. In his 11 games, he threw for just over 3,200 yards on 69.3% completion for 27 touchdowns and only three picks. That was enough to put him top-three in several single-season passing statistics, including being first in passing yards, completion percentage, and touchdown-interception ratio.

As for Hunter, his case is predicated on his two-way ability as a dual-athlete for Colorado. At receiver, he was their third-leading receiver with 57 catches for 721 yards and five scores. Then, at corner, he posted 31 tackles and team-highs in the secondary with five deflections and three interceptions. In doing so, he played the most snaps in the sport last season with 1,102, 475 on offense, 631 on defense, and 32 on special teams, in his nine appearances. That earned him All Pac-12 and Consensus All-American honors while also being the winner of The Paul Hornung Award.

Both Sanders and Hunter could very well have the statistical seasons necessary to at least be at the ceremony, if not win the award, in New York in mid-December. However, the only aspects of their cases for it that Coach Prime is concerned with are their team’s victories.

“I don’t really care about that award. But I would love for us to win so they would have the opportunity to experience that experience,” Sanders said.

Sanders believes Shedeur, Travis Hunter could be top two NFL Draft picks

Deion Sanders has been bullish for some time about the draft prospects for two of his top players in Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders. His high hopes for them persist as he heads into year two with them in Boulder.

Speaking with ESPN’s Pete Thamel at Big 12 Media Days on Wednesday, Sanders lodged a lofty prediction. He thinks Shedeur and Hunter could be the top two players picked in the 2025 NFL Draft.

“They could be one and two, based on need and desire from the league,” Sanders said. “They could be one and two. I don’t see many flaws, if there’s any flaw in their games. They don’t give a darn about that, though. What they want to do is win. They want to win and they want to go out winners.”
