Five Star Movement, Italy's populist party led by former prime minister Giuseppe Conte, has ended its year-long lack of political affiliation on the European stage by joining The Left, the most left-wing formation in the European Parliament. The Left encompasses members like France Unbowed (LFI), Germany's Die Linke, Spain's Podemos, Greece's Syriza and Ireland's Sinn Féin, all of whom embrace various degrees of Eurosceptism. In the June elections, the pan-European family secured 39 seats in the hemicycle, two more than it previously had. With the eight MEPs from the Five Star Movement, also k...

Italy's state broadcaster RAI is at the centre of a new row involving its treatment of top government figures. On 23 June, Sangiuliano attended the Taobook literary festival on the Sicilian Island of Taormina.* As he took the stage, Sangiuliano began addressing the crowd about the importance of protecting cultural roots from a "fluid society," which provoked loud heckling. But in the RAI broadcast on Wednesday, the boos were completely cut out and replaced by applause. Vide...

A hot start to summer in Europe along with escalating overtourism protests have brought sustainable travel into focus. According to UN Tourism, Italy hosted more than 63 million international tourists in 2019, making it one of the most visited countries on the planet. Tourism accounts for about 13 per cent of Italy’s GDP, a not insignificant chunk of the country’s national economy. Chocolate giant Fererro is launching a vegan version of the popular Nutella spread to go on sale in supermarkets in Italy this autumn. Nutella's origins can be traced back to World War II when cocoa was limited and expensive. As a result, chocolate makers searched for new ways to produce their products using ingredients such as hazelnuts. Nutella's own journey began in 1964 with the sale of its first jar of the hazelnut spread in Piedmont, Italy. The company's iconic logo appeared on the worldwide stage the following year, with sales expanding from Italy to Germany, France, and Australia. Toda...

Last week Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni blocked the EU job nomination package, including abstaining from on Ursula Von Der Leyen as a candidate for re-election as EU Commission President. She argued the deal had problems of both “method and merit”. Before the Italian parliament, she said it was “undemocratic” because it didn’t take into account the people’s vote. With the double “no” to Kallas and Costa, questions are being asked in Brussels and in Rome if Italy will be isolated. Some analysts say it’s just a way for the Italian leader to buy more time. With only a couple of weeks to g...

Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Melonia has yet to made a public comment following Marine Le Pen's right-wing party's triumph in the first round of the French elections this weekend. Yet, other officials were quick to express their views. The first to react to the news in Italy was right-wing Matteo Salvini, historically a political ally of Le Pen. He congratulated her while also taking the opportunity to criticise French President Emmanuel Macron. Enrico Letta, a representative of the Democratic Party, Italy’s main opposition party, said the attitude of the Italian government in Europe depends...
