The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a Chinese resolution with US support that urges rich countries to close the artificial intelligence (AI) gap with poorer, developing countries. The Chinese-sponsored resolution asks the international community to create a "fair, open, inclusive and non-discriminatory business environment," for AI's design and development. It also aims to promote international cooperation, including sharing knowledge and transferring technology to developing countries. It is the second UN resolution approved on the topic. Donald Trump cannot be prosecuted for official acts conducted while president, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on July 1. The landmark ruling said he can still be prosecuted for private acts, but is the first time in U.S. history that any form of presidential immunity from prosecution has been recognized. The 6-3 ruling is a rejection of a lower court decision throwing out Trump's claim of immunity over his attempts to overturn the result of the 2020 U.S. presidential election. Six conservative justices were in the majority and three liberal justices dissented. "We conclude that under our constit...

Former US President Donald Trump has been granted some immunity from prosecution, according to the US Supreme Court who have delayed a decision being made on Trump's convictions. The Supreme Court ruled that former presidents are entitled to immunity from prosecution for official acts taken when in office, but do not have immunity for unofficial acts. The decision will throw the case back to a lower court which will conclude how to apply the ruling and ultimately delay the trial, potentially past November's upcoming presidential election. Trump is currently charged in a federal election interf...

US President Joe Biden has made a forceful bid to quell anxieties over his unsteady showing in his debate with former President Donald Trump. Biden's halting delivery and meandering comments, particularly early in the debate, have fuelled concerns among members of his own party that at 81 he's not up for the task of leading the country for another four years. "I know I'm not a young man. State the obvious," he told supporters at a rally in North Carolina. "I don't walk as easily as I used to. I don't speak as smoothly as I used to. I don't debate as well as I used to. But I know what I do know...

Russia's President Vladimir Putin has suggested resuming production of intermediate-range missiles that were banned under a now-defunct treaty with the United States. The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty banned the use of ground-based nuclear and conventional missiles with a range of between 500-5,500 kilometres. It was regarded as an arms control landmark when Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and US President Ronald Reagan signed it in 1988. But America withdrew from the pact in 2019, citing Russian violations. "We need to start production of these strike systems and then, based ...
