FSU’s Link Jarrett reflects on son, J.T., also being in Omaha with NC State for College World Series

With Florida State in action in the Men’s College World Series on Sunday in an elimination game against Virginia, Father’s Day festivities have moved to the back burner for the respective squads. But not necessarily for Seminoles skipper Link Jarrett and his eldest son, J.T. Jarrett, currently on staff for the NC State baseball program.

Along with the Seminoles, the Wolfpack are also in Omaha — on the other side of the bracket — giving the father and son duo a chance to spend some quality time together on Saturday. The elder Jarrett explained on the ESPN broadcast on Sunday that getting some time to unplug with his son on Saturday, following a disappointing loss on Friday, was a nice salve for his frayed nerves.

“It’s great and I got to sit over there behind the first base dugout when he threw BP yesterday so I was a dad,” Jarrett said. “That was really cool for me just to sit back there by myself. I was a little bit upset when I woke up yesterday morning, but coming to this stadium and watching him do his thing and learn how to execute the coaching industry was awesome for me. And we got to go to dinner last night. So those are wins, yesterday, for me.”

And both father and son have seen their teams end up in a similar spot: Losing the opener and needing to win a handful of games in a row to make it out of their double-elimination bracket and into the championship series, where they could in theory meet.

But for that to happen, the Seminoles need to outlast Virginia on Sunday afternoon and the Wolfpack need a win over Florida on Monday just to stay alive for another game.

Jarrett is pleased with starter Carson Dorsey against the Cavaliers

Florida State’s No. 2 starter, Carson Dorsey, took the bump to start against Virginia and pitched four scoreless innings to start the game.

Jarrett praised the auspicious start but noted Virginia’s high-powered offense would need some deft work from Dorsey for him to keep the Cavaliers off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

“He’s done a nice job,” Jarrett said. “We talked about before, when you see him command multiple pitches early in the outing, that’s a really good sign. And he actually has thrown all four of them fairly well. Now, that group on the other side, they know what they’re doing and they game plan and they do a very nice job of adjusting. So having everything in play is a good start, navigating the flow of the game and how to execute and manage their reaction to what you’re doing, that becomes a deeper layer within the game.”
