Football: Japan forward Asano joins Mallorca in Spanish La Liga

Japan forward Takuma Asano has joined Mallorca on a two-year deal after leaving Bochum following the expiry of his contract, the Spanish La Liga club announced Saturday.

The 29-year-old Asano, who famously scored the winner in Japan's 2-1 victory over Germany at the 2022 World Cup group stage in Qatar, has nine goals from 52 games for the Samurai Blue.

Spain will be the third overseas country Asano has played in professionally after spells at Stuttgart, Hannover and Bochum in Germany, as well as Partizan Belgrade in Serbia.

The former Sanfrecce Hiroshima forward initially joined Arsenal in 2016 but never featured for the English club. The pacey forward scored six goals in 29 Bundesliga games for Bochum last term.

Asano joins Yoshito Okubo, Akihiro Iegana and Takefusa Kubo on the list of Japanese players to join Mallorca, who finished 15th last season in the Spanish top tier.
