Newcastle United’s Kieran Trippier has been in the headlines of late.
Indeed, the Newcastle defender has been a consistent presence in the England squad for their pretty underwhelming time of things at Euro 2024 thus far.
With Luke Shaw yet to kick a ball in anger, Trippier has been deployed at left-back.
The 33-year-old clearly isn’t the ideal option there as he’s right footed (to the surprise of positively no one) and it has been highlighted as one of England’s issues.
Trippier was then expected to drop out of the starting lineup for Saturday’s game against Switzerland as Gareth Southgateconsidered switching to a three-man defensive unit, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Bukayo Saka at one point tipped to be the wing-backs.
However, Southgate then spoke in glowing terms about Trippier on Friday before reports emerged suggesting the Newcastle star would start over Alexander-Arnold.
Jamie Carragher, it’s fair to say, is not happy.

Speaking about the proposed team on Sky Sports, Carragher said: “He’s picked Trippier over Trent Alexander-Arnold; which I just cannot fathom, at all.”
Kieran Trippier has doubters at England level
Trippier may have struggled for Newcastle this season but has broadly done a decent job for England, frustrations about not using his left foot (which he can do little about, anyway) aside.
Still, it’s not as if everyone is happy.
Former Three Lions goalkeeperBen Foster recently suggested Trippier lacks the attacking drive needed to be a really compelling option on either side of the defence.
Things may have not gone to plan for him at St James’ Park in the season just gone, but surely his creativity cannot be questioned. He still got ten Premier League assists last season, after all.
It will be fascinating to see if Foster and Carragher are proven right in their reservations of the Newcastle star.
